Recently, Year 7 have been reading the book 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman in their Literacy classes. The book, inspired by events during World War II, follows a Jewish boy named Felix who lived in Poland, on a quest to find his book-keeper parents after he sees Nazis burning the books from a Catholic orphanage.

To further their understanding of the topic, and following on from Holocaust Memorial Day at the end of January, Year 7 received a visit from guest speaker Judith Hayman, discussing her family's escape from Nazi-occupied Austria, and the challenges her mother faced during one of history's darkest periods.

The students engaged well with Judith's talk, listening attentively, even offering their own questions to learn more about the harrowing experiences and to better understand the wider situation during World War II. She left a lasting impression and we thank her for sharing such a poignant story.
