Hertswood Academy Sixth Form students were treated to an inspiring visit from football legend David Dein, former co-owner and vice-chairman of Arsenal, and vice-chairman of the Football Association. The session, introduced by a video message from Ian Wright, was packed with valuable life lessons and insights into the world of football.

Mr Dein shared anecdotes from his illustrious career, including his time at the helm of Arsenal and his pivotal role in the formation of the Premier League. He emphasised the importance of teamwork, using a memorable demonstration with pencils to illustrate how collective effort can achieve what individuals cannot. He also highlighted three key attributes of successful people: hard work, vision, and courage, citing examples like Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp's dedication to their craft. He even gave students a taste of decision-making by having them critique some difficult refereeing calls from the 2018 World Cup. Mr Dein also offered practical advice for interviews, stressing the importance of punctuality and smart attire.

The students were thoroughly engaged and appreciative of Mr Dein's insights, particularly his personal motto: 'You don't get anywhere unless you stick your neck out.' The session concluded with a Q&A, photo opportunities, and autograph signings, leaving a lasting impression on the students.
