Health & Social Care

Back

Health and Social Care promotes the understanding of key issues within today’s health and social care sector. It equips students with the knowledge and skills needed for work in the sector by looking into key areas such as legislation, barriers that people in society may experience, major life events and their effects on people’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social development.

Key Stage 4

At KS4 in Health and Social we follow the BTEC Level 2 Tech award program. This vocational qualification provides a solid foundation for students wishing to embark on a career within Health and Social Care. Students develop an understanding of how people grow and develop through their lives. Explaining how factors such as lifestyle choices and relationships affect this development. Also, students investigate what being healthy actually means. Learners look at the factors that can have a positive or negative influence on a person’s health and wellbeing. Skills will be developed in order for students to interpret physiological and lifestyle indicators, and what they mean for someone’s state of health. This data will be used to learn how to use this information to design an appropriate plan for improving someone’s health and wellbeing, including short and long-term targets. Additionally, students will explore the difficulties an individual may face when trying to make these changes.

Key Stage 5

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care is equivalent in size to one A Level. It is designed for learners who are interested in learning about the health and social care sector. Learners will gain knowledge and understanding about human development through different life stages, how different factors affect individuals as well as the roles and responsibilities of workers in the healthcare profession as well as the regulations and codes of practice that they adhere to. Learners will develop a greater understanding of different needs that people have and how to support individuals with different needs and apply their knowledge to case study scenarios.
