Citizenship
BackThe GCSE Citizenship qualification at Hertswood seeks to develop student's knowledge, skills and understanding so they can play a key part in our democratic society and become active and informed citizens. Pupils will learn about democracy, politics, parliament and voting. In addition, they will also investigate topics surrounding human rights, justice, the law, identities and diversity. Through such topics, we aim to develop student’s abilities to create sustained and reasoned arguments, present various viewpoints and plan practical citizenship actions to benefit society. They will also gain the ability to recognise bias, critically evaluate arguments, weigh evidence and look for alternative interpretations and sources of evidence, all of which are essential skills valued by higher education and employers.
Citizenship understanding develops through the knowledge of how a society operates and functions and its underlying values. The overarching theme of this specification is ‘How citizens can try to make a difference’. This aim is supported by three content themes: Life in Modern Britain, Rights and Responsibilities, and Politics and Participation. Through exploring these themes, students will have developed the knowledge and skills to create their own active citizenship campaigns to help raise awareness of a particular issue faced within the local community or the UK.
