Philosophy, Religion and Ethics

Back

Philosophy, Religion and Ethics examines what it is to be human in the modern world, engaging with the questions which lie at the heart of understanding where each individual stands. Through the academic lenses of philosophy, theology and ethics, students are challenged to explore human diversity and what shapes the thinking of both themselves and others.

Starting from the question ‘Where do I stand?’ students explore developments of faith and secularism, building  a well-rounded understanding of both the main religious traditions and worldviews of the world, the UK and the local community.

Students learn how to identify their own views; to speak and write articulately, as well as cultivating the  core skills of analysing real-world issues of morality, and considering diverse viewpoints, able to assess moral arguments and ethical perspectives. They are encouraged to think critically and ethically, reasoning about personal beliefs and institutional religious practices, asking how religious, philosophical, ethical and non-religious worldviews may affect attitudes.

Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3, PRE aims to develop characteristics and key skills that help prepare all students for dealing with life: considering their own starting point, raising awareness of other faiths, establishing a sense of identity, developing open and enquiring minds and encouraging empathy with others. Students develop the skills to discuss their own views and explore the opinions of others.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4, students study AQA GCSE RE as a full course option. The skills they can develop in PRE are extremely helpful once they leave school.  Being able to express opinions clearly, being able to discuss and debate in a reasoned way, and improved writing skills, will all be important whether students decide to go to college, university or start employment.  Through studying GCSE Religious Studies, students will encounter a wide range of concepts allowing them to confidently interpret, contextualise and analyse the expressions of religions and world views they encounter.
